The land of Nemea loves the vine and that's why it was recognized as a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) in 1971. In its soils, beyond the finest indigenous red varieties like Agiorgitiko and the exotic, fresh and unexpected Moschofilero from Mantineia, many other varieties have been tested and thrived. Indigenous white varieties such as Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Moschofilero, Roditis, Savvatiano, Muscat of Rio, Kydonitsa, Malvazia and Sklava, among others, are cultivated with excellent results in the Nemea zone. Additionally, international red and white varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Gewürztraminer are successfully grown by the Nemean winemakers.

Nemea is located 45 kilometers southwest of Corinth, just an hour and a half from Athens, forty minutes from Nafplio, and half an hour from Corinth.

The heart of the Nemea wine zone was called " Phliasian Land " in classical antiquity. Phlias, the founder of the city-state of Phlius, is mentioned in ancient sources as being wealthy thanks to the vineyards gifted to the area by his father, Dionysus. He produced the wine that King Agamemnon drank, as well as the " Phliasian wine " shared during the ancient Nemean Games. In fact, the coins of Phlius featured symbols of Dionysus, the god of the vine and wine. The Agiorgitiko variety took its name from the village of Agios Georgios, which replaced the ancient city of Phlius in the 13th century. Other names by which one can identify the wine of Nemea include " Black Nemea ", " Mavroudi " or " Heracles' Blood ".

The cultivation of Agiorgitiko in Nemea is timeless. There are even written references in Ottoman archives regarding the cultivation of the variety in the area since the 16th century. It is the largest Protected Designation of Origin wine zone in Greece, covering over 2.000 hectares, planted with the finest red variety of southern Greece, Agiorgitiko or " Black Nemea ".

Agiorgitiko, a variety representing the Greek vineyard, has become synonymous with the PDO Nemea zone. It makes up 80% of the Nemea vineyard, covering 25.000 acres. Seventeen villages, seventeen different locations, compose the unique mosaic of the Nemea zone, where the Agiorgitiko variety has been cultivated for centuries. Differences in elevation, topography, microclimate and soil composition create different " expressions " of this versatile variety.
